We asked members of our Wash Smart team to share what actually works in a laundromat setting. Here’s what they recommend.

How to Remove Crayon from Clothing

Crayons are wax-based, which is why degreaser is the most commonly recommended starting point. Several team members independently pointed to this method, including Veronica and Monica, based on what they see daily at our locations.

Before applying any product, it helps to remove as much excess wax as possible.

Recommended steps:

1. Gently scrape or chip off excess wax using a dull edge, such as a plastic card or spoon. This prevents grinding more wax into the fabric.
2. Check the garment’s care label before applying any cleaning product.
3. Test degreaser, vinegar, or other strong products on an inconspicuous area first, especially on delicate or synthetic fabrics.
4. Apply a degreaser directly to the affected area.
5. Add dish soap or Zote soap.
6. For tougher stains, add white vinegar or baking soda.
7. Gently work the product into the fabric and wash as usual.

Do not place the item in the dryer until you’re sure the stain is gone. Heat can permanently set wax and pigment into the fabric. If the item has already been dried, the process may need to be repeated.

How to Remove Ink or Marker

When it comes to ink or marker stains, the most consistent recommendation from our team is rubbing alcohol. Maria and Karen both shared that alcohol is one of the most reliable options for lifting ink from fabric.

Other products that can help include hand sanitizer, hydrogen peroxide, and specialty ink-removal or stain-removal products designed specifically for ink.

Acetone is sometimes mentioned for ink stains, but it should be used with extreme caution. Acetone can damage acetate fabrics, certain synthetic materials, and some dyes, and should be avoided unless the garment’s care label clearly allows the use of strong solvents.

How to treat ink stains:

1. Place a towel under the stained area.
2. Apply alcohol, hand sanitizer, or a specialty ink remover with a cotton pad or cloth.
3. Dab gently rather than rubbing aggressively.
4. Wash the item after treating the stain.
